The Saddest Thing In Life Is Wasted Talent
As I go through Facebook and other social media outlets, I always stumble upon posts that give people the justification to continue on with their lifestyles. For instance, I found this article which basically states that researchers have concluded that smarter people are those with nocturnal habits and with a tendency to engage in more drugs and have more sex. I was surprised to see how many of my connections posted this article – as if they were providing an excuse for their perceived intelligence and their laziness.
While I agree that this article might have some validity to it, I do have to add that I don't believe the combination of innate intelligence and having a later schedule is enough to justify anything of substance in this world. Intelligence is like any other skill in this world – only useful when you truly tap into it and work at it everyday. I believe that only when a person is truly motivated to succeed will they get out of their comfort zone and make things happen! As such, self-motivation is the key to success!
The first and, the hardest step in success, is figuring out what you are passionate about. Only when you are truly enamored by what you do on a daily basis will you be able to overcome all obstacles in your path and succeed. The only way you figure this out is if you go out there and try many different things, even if you have no prior knowledge of the task. As I have mentioned in past posts, I hadn't the slightest clue as to how to start a clothing and accessories line. However, I read many books and learned on the job, because only when you have gotten your hands dirty will you be able to learn and grow as a person.
After you figure out what you passionate about, the second thing is just maintaining your inspiration and strengthening your resolve for what you are working for. Life has a funny way of testing our resolve – when we commit ourselves to accomplish a certain goal, there are always obstacles that are thrown in our direction in order to test us. If we want something for the wrong reasons, we will quit right away. However, if we truly want something, we will be able to handle anything thrown at us. After overcoming the initial hurdles of starting a venture, you are able to overcome about almost anything.
Thirdly, you need to adjust your thoughts and daily habits in order to achieve your dream. Being inspired and maintaining your resolve can only happen if you begin to think positively and you adjust yourself appropriately. Remember, for the majority of us, our work begins in the morning – not in the afternoon. If you are waking up at 10am every day, you can't expect to achieve the same results as someone who is waking up at 6am for the same reason!
Inspiration and motivation go hand in hand. You can't have one without the other. Being a night owl might make you a bit more intelligent, however without the necessary commitment to putting it into good use, then intelligence is no longer an inherent advantage. And, as the moral of one my favorite movies, The Bronx Tale, once said, “the saddest thing in life is wasted talent.”
